State of emergency: Now fans of Ian Alleyne’s “Crime Watch” unite on Facebook

So we already knew that Ian Alleyne as a media phenomenon exists only because of the moral bankruptcy of our national leadership.

He thrives because people desperately need someone to stand in the gap and plug the gaping holes in our country’s institutional infrastructure.

Like every vacuum in the universe, those institutional voids will, inevitably, be filled by the next available alternative…at least until something more worthy presents itself as a superior option.

This was the stark realisation that struck me as I pored through the hundreds of comments left by fans of Ian Alleyne’s “Crime Watch” on Facebook.

It is time for a generation of media professionals to emerge as authentic champions of ethical journalism. If not now, when?

  1. The reason why Mr. Alleyne has been so celebrated is because evidently people who should be doing their work were not. The “hunt you down” theme, should be the theme for ALL police officers. The nation seems void of critical thinkers who would state the facts as they are. It took a state of emergency to get the police to do what they are being paid for. It is like giving a doctor a street parade for putting a cast on a broken limb. The legislation needs to be transformed to meet the changing times. Polititians need to be accountable, not just rest as they know they have a five year cushion. I am so frustrated, that I have to ascend from the arena and focus on a level where I know, there must be an unltimate reason for all the madness that surrounds us. Not only locally, but regionally and internationally.

    1. Alana, I agree. Pumping out meaningless statistics in daily media briefings hosted by the police is just the politicians’ way of diverting attention from the fundamental issue that you raise here. The underlying question remains: “WHY do we need a state of emergency to get police to do their job?”

Like you said, “The nation seems void of critical thinkers who would state the facts as they are.”

Also, I agree that trumpeting the purported decrease in crime as “success” for the state of emergency is like giving a doctor a street parade for putting a cast on a broken limb. Good analogy.
